FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS. DOT is a symbol that has been defined in this standard. It stands for “Department of Transportation”. Types of non-mineral oil-based brake fluid are DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5 (5.1). DOT5 is a silicone-based brake fluid.
